Of course it came out on 4/20, and of course nobody saw it coming. Sleep’s first full-length of new material in roughly two decades dropped with barely a day’s warning, and The Sciences sounds exactly like the band that made Dopesmoker, only with better amplifiers and a lot more patience.
After the short title-track intro, “Marijuanaut’s Theme” rolls in with the fattest riff Matt Pike has written in years, Al Cisneros intoning over it like a stoned prophet. “Sonic Titan” stretches out for over twelve minutes without a wasted bar, and “Giza Butler” is the sly highlight, a groove so heavy it bends time, with a title that tells you exactly whose altar these guys pray at.
Jason Roeder’s drumming is the secret weapon throughout: loose enough to swing, solid enough to carry those endless riffs. “The Botanist” then lets the whole thing float off into instrumental haze. It’s a pure, unapologetic Sleep record, and it was worth the wait.
