Georgia is not the first country anyone names in funeral doom, but Ennui have been working at it since 2012, and on Qroba – their fifth album, released by Meuse Music Records – they sound like a band nobody should overlook. Founders David Unsaved and Serj Shengelia, who started as a duo, now lead a full line-up, and Greg Chandler of Esoteric produced the record. That choice tells you most of what you need to know about its depth and weight.
Five songs, around an hour. The opener “Antinatalism” runs past ten minutes and never feels long. “Decima” is the heart of it, with the panduri – the Georgian lute – threading a folk melody through the gloom, and “Becoming Void” is another highlight. Do not put this on in July sunshine. Do put it on.
