Moon scales. The title alone sets the scene: pale light on dark water, something shimmering that you cannot quite hold. Neige keeps the dreamy shoegaze haze of Alcest’s earlier work but lets the black metal past back into the room, and the rasped screams, clearest on “Percées de lumière”, feel like a cold wave breaking over a calm shore.
The record never hurries. That song rises out of grey murk into sudden brightness, and “Sur l’océan couleur de fer” closes the album like the tide going out at night, slow and slightly frightening. Some will find it too slow. Most of us simply drifted with it.
