Short, glossy and occasionally gorgeous, Sonder is TesseracT at their most compact. Daniel Tompkins is the star again: on “Luminary” he glides over Acle Kahney’s elastic, low-slung riffing with a falsetto that makes the whole thing feel weightless, then “King” brings the heaviest moment of the album, a lurching groove that finally lets the band’s low end off the leash.
The problem is that eight tracks don’t leave much room to build. “Juno” and “Beneath My Skin” are strong but play it safe, and “Smile” feels a little like a leftover. When it clicks, as on “Mirror Image” with its slow-building ache, nobody in djent does atmosphere better. It just ends too soon.
