Gatecreeper – Deserted album cover

Arizona’s finest Bolt Thrower devotees came back sharper and meaner. Deserted is short, ugly and catchy in the way only good old-school death metal can be: ten songs of crushing mid-tempo riffs, the odd blast, and Chase Mason growling like a man who’s been out in the sun too long.

Kurt Ballou’s mix gives it a thick, warm guitar tone without polishing off the grime. “From the Ashes” is the anthem, built around a melodic lead that could have come straight off …For Victory, and “Boiled Over” lives up to its name with a slow, punishing groove. The title track sets the scene with a riff that just keeps rolling, while “Puncture Wounds” and “Barbaric Pleasures” are quick, nasty bursts that keep the pace honest.

Nothing here reinvents the genre, and that’s the point. Riff for riff, one of the most satisfying death metal records of the year.
