Album number fifteen from the Montreal veterans, produced as usual by guitarist J-F Dagenais and mixed by Chris Clancy with help from Colin Richardson. Eliran Kantor did the cover. On paper it ticks every box, and in practice it is a solid, efficient Kataklysm record that plays it very safe.
The good stuff comes early. “Bringer of Vengeance” is a proper anthem with a chorus built for festival crowds, the title track has a fat groove, and “Die as a King” mixes blast beats with Maurizio Iacono’s shouted hooks well. After that, songs like “Combustion” and “Heroes to Villains” follow the same formula without adding much. Kataklysm have been more groove than hyperblast for a long time now, and that is fine, but a bit more of the old speed would have helped. Good, not great.
