Incantation – Unholy Deification album cover

Incantation’s latest for Relapse is a concept album, and it shows in the titles: every song has a subtitle in brackets and a Roman numeral, and the numerals don’t follow the running order. John McEntee is still the only original member, with Kyle Severn on drums, Chuck Sherwood on bass and Luke Shively on second guitar. Eliran Kantor painted the cover, and there are guest spots from Jeff Becerra of Possessed, ex-Revenant’s Henry Veggian and Dan Vadim Von.

The sound is classic Incantation: murky, cavernous riffs, McEntee’s low, gurgling vocals, and sudden shifts from blasting to crawling doom. “Offerings (The Swarm) IV” and “Concordat (The Pact) I” open the album with real urgency, while “Homunculus (Spirit Made Flesh) IX” is the slowest and heaviest moment. Closer “Circle (Eye of Ascension) VII” ends it on a high. The production is a little cleaner than on the old classics, but the atmosphere is intact.

Best tracks:

Offerings (The Swarm) IV
Concordat (The Pact) I
Homunculus (Spirit Made Flesh) IX
Circle (Eye of Ascension) VII
