Opera IX – Veneficium album cover

Witches, poison gardens and spooky synths. Italy’s Opera IX have been doing occult black metal since before most of today’s corpse-painted kids were born, and Veneficium is a proper cauldron of it. Founder Ossian is still steering the ship, with singer Dipsas Dianaria out front, declaiming and shrieking about the old herbal craft of women like she’s casting a hex on you personally.

Thunderous drums, creepy keys, doomy crawls, then sudden bursts of blackened fury. A couple of tracks end a bit abruptly, and it could lose a song or two. Stay for the finale, though: the seven-minute “Black Sabbath” closes the ritual in style.

Best tracks:

Saturni Arcanum
Defixiones
Veneficium
Asphodelios
