Ov Sulfur – Endless album cover

Josh Schroeder recorded, mixed and mastered Endless, and you can hear it within a minute: this is the same enormous, wall-to-wall sound he gives Lorna Shore. The orchestral layers are wide, the low end is huge and the drums hit like a hydraulic press. The catch is dynamics. Almost everything sits at the same volume, so the breakdowns, which should feel like the floor giving way, often land as just more of the same.

The songwriting is where Ov Sulfur actually moved forward. Their second album pulls deathcore hard towards black metal, with tremolo runs and blasts carrying whole sections, and the vocal split between Ricky Hoover and guitarist Chase Wilson is the smartest thing on it. “Forlorn”, which Wilson has described as his attempt at a melodeath waltz, is the best example: quick exchanges, an odd swing, real hooks.

Sequencing hurts, though. “Wither”, a clean-sung ballad, arrives straight after “Vast Eternal” and stops the record cold, while the closing “Endless//Loveless” shows how the same idea works when it’s placed properly. Guest spots from Ingested, Carcosa and Distant keep the second half alive. Better than the debut on every count, but a looser master would have made it a lot better.

Best tracks:

Vast Eternal
A World Away (feat. Alan Grnja of Distant)
