Nineteen tracks in about 32 minutes. Book Burner, Pig Destroyer’s fifth full-length, was recorded at Scott Hull’s own Visceral Sound studio and released by Relapse Records, with Adam Jarvis behind the kit in place of Brian Harvey. The change is audible: Jarvis plays with a cold, almost mechanical precision, and the songs are shorter and harder for it. Guest vocalists include Jason Netherton of Misery Index plus Richard Johnson and Kat Katz of Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
“Sis” and “The American’s Head” are over before you have found the volume knob. “The Diplomat” is as close to a hit as grindcore allows, and the Phil Mucci-directed video made it the face of the album. J.R. Hayes still writes the most vivid lyrics in the genre, and the closer “Permanent Funeral” stretches out into something slower and nastier. The middle stretch blurs a little, as grind tends to, but nothing here is filler.
