Satyricon were formed in Oslo in 1991. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) and drummer Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad) have made up the band’s core since 1993, the year their debut album Dark Medieval Times was released.

The Shadowthrone (1994) and Nemesis Divina (1996) completed an early run of albums rooted in the Norwegian black metal sound of the time. From Rebel Extravaganza (1999) onwards, the band increasingly worked elements of traditional heavy metal into their music. Volcano (2002) won the Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian Grammy, for best metal album.

Now, Diabolical followed in 2006, The Age of Nero in 2008 and the self-titled Satyricon in 2013. All three albums reached the top ten of Norway’s VG-lista album chart.

In 2015 Satyr was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The band’s ninth studio album, Deep Calleth Upon Deep, was released by Napalm Records on 22 September 2017. It was recorded in Oslo and Vancouver, mixed by Mike Fraser and uses an 1898 drawing by Edvard Munch as its cover.

A new studio album was announced for May 2024 but has not yet been released, so Deep Calleth Upon Deep remains Satyricon’s most recent studio album. In 2026 they played European festivals including Alcatraz in Belgium and Summer Dying Loud in Poland.

Current line-up: Satyr (vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards), Frost (drums)
