Visions of Atlantis were founded in August 2000 in Bruck an der Mur, in the Austrian state of Styria, by Werner Fiedler, Thomas Caser, Christian Stani and Chris Kamper. The band was built around a concept inspired by the legend of Atlantis, with Nicole Bogner as its first singer. Their debut album Eternal Endless Infinity appeared in 2002, and Cast Away followed in 2004 as the start of a long relationship with Napalm Records.

Bogner left in 2005, and a series of singer changes followed, with Melissa Ferlaak and later Maxi Nil fronting the band during the era of Trinity (2007), Delta (2011) and Ethera (2013).

In 2013 most of the line-up left, leaving drummer Thomas Caser as the only founding member, and French singer Clémentine Delauney joined alongside male vocalist Siegfried Samer. Bassist Herbert Glos and guitarist Christian Douscha came in at the end of 2017, and The Deep & the Dark followed on 16 February 2018. Later that year Samer stepped down because of touring demands, and Italian singer Michele Guaitoli took his place in time for Wanderers (2019).

The pirate-themed Pirates (2022) reached No. 17 in Germany, and Pirates II – Armada (5 July 2024) climbed to No. 5 there. On 6 February 2026 Napalm Records released Armada – An Orchestral Voyage, which is not a new studio album but an instrumental, fully orchestral reworking of Pirates II – Armada. The vocals are replaced by real instruments such as violin, flute and duduk, and Michele Guaitoli produced, mixed and mastered the record.

Current line-up: Clémentine Delauney (vocals), Michele Guaitoli (vocals), Christian Douscha (guitar), Herbert Glos (bass), Thomas Caser (drums).
