Amon Amarth formed in 1992 in Tumba, Sweden, and took their name from the Sindarin name for Mount Doom in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Their lyrics draw on Viking history and Norse mythology.

The band signed with Metal Blade Records and released their debut album, Once Sent from the Golden Hall, in 1998. Metal Blade has remained their label ever since. Vocalist Johan Hegg, guitarist Olavi Mikkonen and bassist Ted Lundström have formed the core of the group throughout its history. Twilight of the Thunder God followed in 2008 and Deceiver of the Gods in 2013.

In March 2015 the band parted ways with drummer Fredrik Andersson after 17 years. Tobias Gustafsson played drums as a session musician on Jomsviking (2016), and Jocke Wallgren, who had drummed on the tour for that album, was named the permanent drummer in September 2016.

Berserker followed in 2019 and The Great Heathen Army in 2022. The thirteenth studio album, The Allfather Awakens, was released by Metal Blade on 2 October 2026. It was produced by Jacob Hansen and recorded at his studio in Denmark in two sessions, in spring 2025 and March 2026.

Current line-up: Johan Hegg (vocals), Olavi Mikkonen (guitar), Johan Söderberg (guitar), Ted Lundström (bass), Jocke Wallgren (drums)
