Oathbreaker were formed in Ghent in 2008, with Caro Tanghe on vocals. Their debut studio album, Mælstrøm, was released in 2011.
The second album, Eros|Anteros, followed in 2013 on Deathwish Inc. Its themes, according to the label’s announcement, were “love and the anti-love (life and death)”.
Rheia, the band’s third studio album, was released on 30 September 2016 through Deathwish Inc. According to the label, it was recorded to two-inch tape in a largely live setting, with many of Caro Tanghe’s vocals captured in single takes.
After touring for Rheia, Oathbreaker went on hiatus. During the break members played in other bands, including Wiegedood and Predatory Void.
In 2026 the band returned to mark the tenth anniversary of Rheia, performing the album in full at Roadburn Festival in April. Further shows followed at Prepare the Ground in Toronto in May and ArcTanGent in August, with club dates in Berlin and London scheduled for December 2026.
Current line-up: Caro Tanghe (vocals), Lennart Bossu (guitar), Gilles Demolder (guitar, bass), Wim Coppers (drums)
