Ashenspire formed in Glasgow in 2013 around drummer and vocalist Alasdair Dunn, the band’s creative director. Their sound is rooted in avant-garde black metal and has been compared to bands such as A Forest of Stars, Dødheimsgard and Vulture Industries.

The debut album, Speak Not of the Laudanum Quandary, was released on 20 January 2017. Its seven long tracks deal with the history of British imperialism and are built around Dunn’s unconventional, theatrical vocal delivery.

The second album, Hostile Architecture, followed in July 2022 through Code666 and Aural Music. It examines how life under late capitalism is shaped by the built environment, from brutalist and postmodern architecture to hostile design such as anti-homeless spikes.

On Hostile Architecture violin and saxophone share space with heavy distortion. The album was premiered by Decibel magazine ahead of its release, and the band has continued to play live since.
