Morbid Angel

Morbid Angel were formed in Tampa, Florida, by guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer and vocalist Mike Browning, and became one of the defining bands of the Florida death metal scene. Bassist and vocalist David Vincent joined in 1986, and the classic line-up with drummer Pete Sandoval recorded the debut album Altars of Madness (1989), followed by Blessed Are the Sick (1991), Covenant (1993) and Domination (1995).

Vincent left in 1996 and was replaced in 1997 by Steve Tucker, who sang on Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998), Gateways to Annihilation (2000) and Heretic (2003). Vincent returned in 2004.

Illud Divinum Insanus, released by Season of Mist in June 2011, was the band’s first album in eight years. Sandoval was recovering from back surgery, so Tim Yeung played drums, with Vincent, Azagthoth and guitarist Thor “Destructhor” Myhren completing the line-up. The album mixed death metal with prominent industrial and electronic elements and was poorly received by much of the band’s fanbase; Vincent and Azagthoth have since both spoken critically about it.

In 2015 Vincent and Yeung left and Steve Tucker returned for a third spell. With new guitarist Dan Vadim Von and drummer Scott Fuller, the band released Kingdoms Disdained through Silver Lining Music on 1 December 2017, a record Tucker described as a straight death metal album.

Charlie Koryn has played drums with the band on tour since 2023. During the 40th-anniversary US tour in March 2023, the roof of the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois, collapsed during a tornado; one concertgoer died and dozens were injured. In late 2024 Morbid Angel withdrew from the Devastation on the Nation tour, citing unforeseen circumstances, and were replaced by I Am Morbid. Co-founder Mike Browning died in July 2026 at the age of 62.

Morbid Angel are still listed as active, with Azagthoth, Tucker and Vadim Von at the core, but no new album has been released since Kingdoms Disdained.
