Horrendous were formed in 2009 by guitarist and vocalist Damian Herring together with brothers Matt Knox (guitar, vocals) and Jamie Knox (drums). The band is usually linked to Philadelphia. Bassist Alex Kulick joined in 2016, and the four-piece has not changed since.
Their debut The Chills (2012), released through Dark Descent Records, was fairly traditional old-school death metal. From Ecdysis (2014) onwards the songs grew longer, more melodic and more progressive, and the band was often compared to the later work of Death.
Anareta (2015) was named album of the year by Decibel, and the band also won praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum and Spin. They then signed with Season of Mist and released Idol in September 2018.
Their fifth album, Ontological Mysterium, was recorded at Herring’s Subterranean Watchtower Studios and released on 18 August 2023. It mixed their technical playing with big, anthemic heavy metal hooks, and Decibel chose it as the best album of 2023.
Current line-up: Damian Herring (guitar, vocals), Matt Knox (guitar, vocals), Alex Kulick (bass), Jamie Knox (drums).
